NEWS WRAP – Lost Pensions Worth £37 Billion

The firm calculated the average value of missing pensions at around £23,000 per pension saver and estimated that those who have a missing pension would be able to retire, on average, two and a half years earlier, in the event that they were able to locate all their funds.

Tracing a pension

Pensions form the bedrock of most peoples’ retirement strategies; it is vital, therefore, that savers are able to locate their savings so that they can plan appropriately and, if suitable, transfer and consolidate their pensions into a cheaper and more effective SIPP or QROPS plan – a strategy that may be particularly effective for those seeking expat pensions advice.

It is hoped that the impending introduction of the Pensions Dashboard will help to reduce the incidence of missing pensions by allowing savers to see all their funds in a single online platform location.

The dashboard was due to be introduced by 2019 but has been delayed by various factors, not least government preoccupation with Brexit and the temporary suspension of the Pensions Bill during last month’s general election.

Expat Tax Planning in 2019

Calendar PlannerTax planning should be a New Year priority for any British citizen who has recently become an expat.

Just last year HM Revenue & Customs increased its efforts to ensure expats met their full tax obligations and has begun to successfully use EU laws that encourage co-operation between member states. “We will not hesitate to use all legal means to collect taxes that are owed,” commented an HMRC spokesperson. Despite this tough talking, the EU this year criticised the UK for its poor record of cross-border tax collection.

It is important to remember that although the HMRC’s new stricter approach remains at an early stage, it is already paying dividends for the government, which estimates that it lost £1.7bn in tax revenue in 2016-17, compared to £4bn in 2011-12. Furthermore, 1,006 requests for tax information were made to EU authorities in 2017. This resulted in the recovery of £5 million. In comparison, similar requests in 2013 yielded just £800,000.

Assurance Vie and Fonds En Euro/Sterling

Simon VerityMany clients have sensibly opted to invest in Assurance Vie (Investment Bonds) type arrangements in France for the huge income tax and inheritance advantages offered though these products for French residents. A large selection of clients have also taken the option of using the Fond en Euros or Sterling funds preferring the guaranteed rates of return offered and the invested capital’s security.

Indeed so used are the Fond en Euros funds within Assurance vie “wrappers” that often clients believe that they are one and the same. The Fond en Euros main principles are that your capital’s value is guaranteed and you are given an annual rate of interest. The assurance vie ensures your funds grow free of French taxation due to the code of law relating to Life Insurance products. This combination has been so used in France and so much money tied up in these arrangements that the Government want to bring in a statute to limit the percentage invested into Fond en Euros per investor portfolio as they see this type of fund as stagnating the French economy and restricting investment into industry via the purchase of “actions” or shares.
