Are you over 65 and still working?

A former pensions minister described the increase in the number of older workers as a ‘social revolution’. The figures can be partly attributed to a rise in the state pension age from 60 for women. It has been going up since 2010 and will hit 65 by 2018, bringing it in line with that of men. For both sexes, it will rise to 66 by 2020 and 67 by 2028.  Legislation was introduced five years ago banning employers from forcing staff to retire at 65 and the demise of generous final-salary pension schemes means most people must work for longer.

The concern that private pensions are unable to sustain people if they retire earlier is also seen as a driving factor, as people have not made ample provision and are, therefore, rightfully worried that they will be in penury if they retire too soon.

On another note, it appears that savers are raiding their pensions in increasing numbers to assist their grandchildren onto the housing ladder.  It has been reported that over 55’s have taken out over £28 million a day in the last 3 months.  The concern with this is that an early raid can leave a deficit when the pot needs to last at least 20 years after age 55.

Spain’s growing economy is good news for jobseekers

You are hired!In the first quarter of 2017, Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GPD) grew by 0.8 per cent, according to preliminary figures from the Spanish Statistical Institute (INE), which was marginally higher than the previous three months’ growth of 0.7 per cent.

The was a larger expansion than many had predicted, causing the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, to update the country’s economic growth forecast for 2017 from 2.5 per cent to 2.7 per cent.

“Recent data for the first quarter of the year, as well as national and international forecasts, have pushed us to revise our growth forecast,” the Prime Minister said.

The Pensions Black Hole

Meeting financial advisorThere’s quite a buzz around pensions at the moment – and rightly so, as they provide the backbone of our income in our later years. But currently, pension deficits are hitting the news, and figuring them out can still prove difficult.

Pension deficits concern what are commonly known as “final salary pensions” or Defined Benefit schemes.   Final salary or defined benefit (DB) schemes are essentially occupational pension schemes that provide a set level of pension at retirement, the amount of which normally depends on your service and earnings at retirement or in the years immediately preceding when you retire. Because your pensionable salary is used as one part of the formula in order to calculate your pension, a final salary scheme is commonly referred to as a ‘salary related’ scheme. Two common examples of ‘final pensionable salary’ would be your last year’s pensionable earnings or an average of your last 3 years’ pensionable salary.

Recently, there have been high-profile failures of these systems, such as the folding of Monarch Airlines – and the collapse of their pension fund. Initially, it appeared that owners could still walk away with a profit (after new hands tried to turn the airline into a more accessible and “Ryanair-like” product) by offloading debts, and this included dropping the pension fund. Ironically, this was once a major credit to the business. The fund, which is now in the Pension Protection Fund (PPF), had been under speculation of being left short when the business first began to struggle back in 2014, after years of asset-stripping.
