Portugal’s Algarve every golfer’s dream

If you’ve always dreamed of spending your retirement years teeing off on a series of golf courses featuring breathtaking views, there is arguably no better place than the country’s southernmost region, the Algarve.

Thanks to its 42 courses in less than 100 miles, the Algarve is largely recognised as one of the best places for golf in the world.

Golfing and the Algarve: a brief history

In 2016, the region celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of its first golf course.

Sir Henry Cotton designed Algarve’s first traditional grass course in 1966. Originally named The Penina, it’s now known as the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course and is widely considered one of the region’s finest golfing destinations. It has repeatedly been used as the venue for the Portuguese Open, and the facility paved the way for many other golf resorts to follow.

Now, more than 50 years on, world class golf resorts have become synonymous with the region.

According to figures from the Algarve Tourism Association, there were nearly 700,000 rounds of golf played in the region within the first six months of 2016, which is an increase from 2015 (itself a record year for the number of rounds played). It appears that the popularity of the sport has only grown since the very first tee-off.

And if golf’s not for you?

Of course, it’s not just golf that has people flocking to the Algarve in their retirement years. The region’s many beaches and beautiful caves give sightseers some superb places to visit, such as the famous Benagil Caves located on the Lagoa coast.

And the beaches also offer the opportunity for numerous water sports, such as windsurfing, parasailing, and scuba diving – or just plain sun worshipping.

EU Expat Pensions Receive EIOPA Reassurance

Map of EuropeLast year the Association of British Insurers (ABI) provoked something of a panic among British expats in Europe. Those who in some way rely on insurance products, such as annuities and life insurance, for the payment of income and expat pensions were understandably alarmed when Huw Evans of the ABI said that a no-deal Brexit could leave insurance contracts in legal limbo because of a risk that payments could not be fulfilled for contracts written pre-brexit. PM Johnson Could Halt the Threat of No-Deal Litigation

Houses of ParliamentBoris Johnson’s elevation to Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has again raised the spectre of a potential no-deal Brexit.

Against this background, it is looking increasingly plausible that predictions of legal action against the UK government by British expats in the EU could become a reality unless the PM takes action. Even in the days before Johnson’s win over Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative Party leadership election, it was warned that expats in Europe could take legal action and sue for loss of rights.

Conservative MP Alberto Costa warned Boris Johnson in a letter dated 20th July 2019*, that unless he was able to tackle the many issues facing expats, his government could be overwhelmed by legal action.
