Expat Trends: Why More Americans Are Moving to France While Britons Decline

France has always had a special allure for those seeking a fresh start, whether it’s the charm of Parisian cafés, the warmth of the French Riviera, or the peaceful countryside. But who’s still making the leap across the Channel or the Atlantic and France these days? Recent figures suggest a surprising trend: Americans are moving to France in greater numbers, while the flow of British expats is slowing.

Recent data from the French Interior Ministry reveals a significant shift in expatriate residency trends. The number of Americans moving to France has increased, whereas fewer Britons are choosing to settle there. This development reflects broader socio-economic factors and shifting migration patterns in the post-Brexit era.

Americans Are Moving To France

In 2024, over 13,000 Americans received their first French residency cards—an increase of 5% from the previous year. This places Americans as the fifth-largest nationality obtaining residency permits in France, following Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians, and Chinese nationals.

This trend suggests growing interest among Americans in relocating to France, driven by the country’s reputation for cultural richness, a better quality of life, and opportunities in both urban and rural areas. Paris, the French Riviera, and other prominent regions offer an attractive lifestyle for those seeking both career and lifestyle transformations.

The Decline of British Residents

Meanwhile, the number of Britons receiving first-time French residency permits has fallen sharply. In 2024, only 8,400 Britons were granted residency—a decline of 10% from 2023 and a striking 24% drop since 2022.

This marks the third consecutive year of decline, primarily influenced by the impact of Brexit. Before 2021, UK citizens did not require residency cards to live in France due to free movement within the European Union. However, with the UK’s departure from the EU, Britons must now navigate new residency regulations and potential economic challenges, making relocation to France less straightforward than before.

Why These Trends Matter

The shifting patterns reflect both political and economic factors:

  • Post-Brexit Challenges: Britons now face additional hurdles, including securing long-term visas and complying with stricter residency requirements. These changes have deterred many potential movers.
  • Growing American Interest: Americans are increasingly drawn to France due to favourable economic conditions, a desire for cultural immersion, and opportunities to work or retire in popular regions like Paris or Provence.

These dynamics also illustrate a need for expatriates to plan their financial futures when relocating across borders carefully.

Financial Advice for UK Expats in Cyprus: A Comprehensive 2024 Guide

Brexit JigsawAt time of writing, Brexit ‘negotiations’ are ongoing with a matter of weeks remaining before the UK’s exit from the European Union. All UK firms operating in the EU will be impacted and that includes those providing financial services also.

So how does this affect Cyprus residents and your relationship with financial services providers in the UK?

Assuming the UK leaves the EU without a withdrawal agreement by 29th March then UK financial advisers will be unable to service their clients who are resident in Cyprus and all other member states outwith the UK. This is because UK firms have previously been able to ‘passport’ their services across the EU. If there is no deal then such passports will effectively be torn up.
