Not just for your holidays
Marbella is one of the most popular places in Europe for UK holidaymakers, but it is also one of the best places to live. It has an agreeable climate, great food, beautiful beaches, stunning accommodation and all the conditions you could ever need for a healthy, relaxed and engaged lifestyle.
For these reasons Marbella in the Costa Del Sol has long been a popular destination for British expats; in fact, for more than fifty years now. As such, there are now thousands of British expatriates within the city and municipality, while many more own holiday homes in the area, often with a view to moving to Marbella in the future.
As is typical of British expats in Spain, many of Marbella’s British residents are retirees, but there is also a movement of younger people from the UK looking to move to Marbella while working the kind of international, “mobile ” jobs that are becoming more prevalent in the second decade of the twenty-first century. Of course, it helps that Marbella’s climate, lifestyle, and educational choices are such major draws.
However, there are challenges to living in Marbella. Most of these are related to punishing Spanish tax rates, asset reporting and bureaucracy. And this is why Blacktower’s financial advisers in Marbella can make a difference to the expat experience; we bring decades of experience, local knowledge, verifiable accreditation and first-class wealth management advice to expats looking for security, confidence and growth.
Perhaps most famous of Marbella’s many lifestyle attractions is the Golden Mile, which is made up of four miles of fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels and designer shops.
There are also many cultural highlights in the city. For example, June annually features the Marbella International Film Festival, while only weeks after this renowned event the city hosts the Marbella Reggae Festival.
But Marbella is more than just a lifestyle paradise. It is also a place of great historical significance. It is thought that the area was inhabited by the Phoenicians from around 7th century BC. Later the Roman’s inhabited the area and there was actually a period of Islamic rule between the 8th and 11th centuries, with some architectural evidence of this period still existing.
But this only part of the city’s architectural appeal, as well as Moorish walls encircling the Old Town, there is the Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz chapel and the 16th century Capilla de San Juan de Dios Church, both of which are around 500 years old.
